Goggles…..just a standard piece of equipment for swimmers…now…..when I swam competitively we didn’t wear them….I know, I know…that had to be a long time ago! We won’t talk about how long ago that was! 😂 Anyway….back to my original point….goggles are one of the most important pieces of equipment in competitive swimming now and finding and caring for the perfect pair is critical.
At Splashwear Aquatics we spend a lot of time helping our customers with finding the perfect pair and as they check out, we offer our customers our standard speech of how to care for them. Goggles do come in a variety of styles, colors, sizes and price points…there is literally something for everyone…but no matter how much you spend on a pair of goggles, you will want to take care of them so they last a long time.
I always tell customers that finding the perfect pair of goggles is like finding the perfect pair of underwear…they may look comfortable but you really don’t know how they are going to feel and fit until you wear them for a while…and once you find that perfect style you will want to stock up.
AND…you want them to last!
The way to make them last the longest is to take a few minutes after each wear to care for them properly! The proper fit - Taking care of your goggles starts with the proper fit. If you have a swim store near you, go in….let them help you find the proper fit. If the pair you choose is too large for your face, water will leak inside and cause damage over time, so find a good fitting pair that is comfortable to wear during your entire swim. If your goggles are comfortable, you won’t mess with them as much and that in itself helps prolong their life. The proper fit, may include changing the strap. We have bungee cords that make adjusting and fitting your goggles a breeze. They are inexpensive and will last much longer than the straps that typically come with goggles.
Anti-fog coating - It is important not to scratch or rub away the anti-fog coating. If your goggles are beginning to fog during your swim, simply rinse them but don’t rub them. If the coating is no longer working there are several anti-fog sprays, drops and even our amazing anti fog inserts that will help with that problem.

After-swim goggle care - After your swim, it is so tempting to just throw your goggles in your swim bag. Take a few minutes and rinse them in clear running water (not pool water) to remove the chlorine, salt, sweat etc. Then store them in a case. We have some great cases that allow your goggles to dry as they are stored. Don’t store them in an airtight container of any type. That just invites mold! Every now and then, take a little extra time to wipe your gaskets down with your fingers or a soft cloth, just to gently get into the crevices and wipe away any lingering sunscreen, eye cream or anything else you had on your face while wearing them. Be gentle with your goggles. If you find a pair of goggles you love….treat them carefully to prolong their time with you!

After swim eye area care - Especially as we swimmers grow older, we see our eye area grow thinner, dryer and prone to marks that take a while to go away. After you shower, apply a good eye cream to the delicate eye area to help the skin around your eyes to stay soft and in great condition. You may even help with some of those pesky eye area wrinkles!! We have a really good one in our store formulated just for swimmers!! So there you have it! If you have any questions about fitting for goggles or choosing the perfect pair, drop in to our store or give a call and we will be happy to help! The eyes have it!!

Happy Swimming, Jeannie
